I like to dress, and I like nice things. Sis is always on a budget, though. The mortgage, car note, electricity, and water must be paid. But I’m going to shop… okay! Places like Fashion Nova, Shein, Pretty Little Thing, Amazon, Micas, and many small fashion boutiques make it so accessible for us.
I’m 5’10, so growing up, it was a little tricky for me to find clothes that were the right length. I hated being tall. All the boys were taller than me and I was really awkward. By the time I was in the 5th grade, I was already 5’7. Baby, those little short petite jeans would not cut it. Thankfully, by the time I got to high school I started embracing my height and more brands started to sell clothes for tall women. Express, New York & Company ( Learner NY IYKYK), and The Gap started selling extended-size jeans. They were more expensive, but my mother would splurge for longer jeans. During the time, Rugged Warehouse ( Now known as Gabes) was a store that would have all the fashions a season later. It's not high-end, but affordable for a mom raising a few kids. My mom always put a few dollars aside for a few pieces from rugged warehouse. You couldn't tell me anything when they got the Express shirt with the big X on it. All the girlies had that shirt. Matched with the Clear Lip Glass from MAC. Just as sticky as it wanted to be. When I got my allowance, I was on the number 3 bus, going to Towson Mall to spend my money on whatever sale I could find.
My grandmother loved clothes and hats. Baby, she was one of the mothers in the church. You better believe she was coming with her hat. My father also loved clothes and jewelry. Rumor has it that when my mom and dad were getting divorced, and he and my uncle were moving my dad's stuff out, I asked for his closet. I was 6!
After college, I worked at Nordstrom for a while, making my shopping addiction worse. That discount would get me every payday. I'd be right down in Nordstrom Rack spending my coins. I knew when the things from upstairs were going to The Rack, so I was ready!
I'm almost never buy anything at full price, because I'm a bargain shopper. I like to mix and match things. I love graphic t-shirts (check out Fashion Nova men, the t-shirts are top tier), shorts, dresses, sweatsuits, sneakers…baggy jeans. I love it all! But for the low. I find things that fit my body type. Im a size 14, I'm tall and I'm top heavy so I can't pull off everything, but I don't restrict myself from being influenced by people who don't have the same body shape as mine. If its cute and I can get these tits in it, I'm probably wearing it!
I've gained a lot of weight over the pass few years and I'm just now becoming comfortable in my skin. Sure, I could stand to lose a few pounds. We have to live a healthy life, but I think its important to be confident at whatever size you are. Embrace yourself and wear what makes you feel good. Gone are the days where plus size women had three stores to shop at. We have options. Step out of your comfort zone and try something different.
I don't have one specific style. I'm pretty versatile, but I'm matchy also. The bag & the shoes have to a least match for me. I also don't buy into the “normal” fashion ideals. I wear white all year! I don't focus on trendy pieces. I wear tall heels even though I'm already 5’10. I mix prints, I buy menswear. If I like it, I like it and I'm not concerned about what others think of it.
Because I'm a bargain shopper, it does not mean I don't invest in quality pieces. Quality denim, classic cross body leather purses, leather boots, a wool trench coat. Some things are just staple pieces. If you buy them once, they will last forever, so catch the good stuff on sale! LOL
When I shop, I always look at the reviews to confirm if its tall girl friendly. Im also looking at the pictures of the people who purchased the item. The reviews are your best friend! I have to check the inseam length, and the sleeve length, so its very important to know your measurements. I have to size up in my tops because of the girl, and sometimes layer for extra support. I also love to accessorize. A hat, stacked bracelets, a big hoop, and shades will spruse any outfit up. You could take your jeans and t-shirt combo to the next level just with accessories.
Wear whatever makes you feel fabulous, unapologetic, and confident. Your personal style is a visual representation of your identity, creativity and personality. Believe in it and love it….Because ya looking like the BOMB GIRL!
